Slow Week

It has been an off week but the forecast keeps promising better days are coming. The prediction for yesterday was awesome, the reality only good. Lots of kiters showed up for what was supposed to be a 20+ knot day but it never got cranked up. Still, not a bad day, and lots warmer than last year.

20+

We've been getting a couple days a week of 20 plus knots. Some days the strong wind is only for a couple of hours, sometimes all afternoon, but it has been good. Today should be nice but next week's forecast is looking low.

Kiting

Every season is a bit different. We've had good wind but it hasn't been too predictable. Only once in a while do we get good wind all afternoon. Temperatures had been mild until recently. We are now having a cold spell and the water is cooling off quickly. The highway between here and Hermosillo has been under construction and that creates such a delay that we seldom get many kiters from the capital city so that it usually doesn't get crowded out on the water.

Although our spot is still one of the best places to kite in the world, it does get damn uncomfortable on the beach. It was so nice before the Salsa Bar was built. We had a place to set our stuff and room to sit out of the wind. Now we are stuck out on the point without any protection at all. The new owners are going to be making some changes soon. I hope that they will be agreeable to making our sport better. One simple proposal would be to give us access to to a storage area where we could keep a portable windbreak.
This one is only $23.00 USD but unfortunately it is in England. I am sure that there must be similar ones available here.

In the meantime:

Great Kiting

We're not getting a lot of windy days but those that we've had have been excellent!  Mostly 15 to 20 with warm, flat water. Wednesday looks the best so far for this week but maybe Tuesday and Thursday as well.

More Kiting Days

We continue to get northwest winds strong enough for some good kiting. The weather predictions have been fairly reliable except they usually under estimate the wind. In the past ten days or so we've had several days of good wind that didn't start until late in the afternoon and then the past two days the wind came early. Most days peak out in the 15 to 20 knot range. Nice warm water. Crowded on weekends. Sunday looks like the next possible good day.

Kiting in September

The start of the season is still a few weeks away but we are already getting northwest wind. The last two days have been particularly nice. The best wind has been between 4:00 and 5:00pm.

We had a hurricane pass by us that changed the beach profile. The beach is flatter with better sand with less rocks. All in all it is very nice. Still storm season though, so it could change again. The hurricane washed away a lot of sand from in front of the bars and the houses down the beach. Much less beach there between the buildings and the sea.

The End

It looks like we've had the last of the notheast winds for the season. Saturday the wind came up late but it sure was nice!

The forecast is calling for some decent south wind this week, starting tomorrow, Tuesday. The south wind usually blows early, and can be done by 1:00pm. Not a lot of punch from these winds and there will be plenty of chop so rig big. The waves will include swell from far south so they have better form and last longer than the La Manga chop. Beginners or kiters not used to launching in waves can enter the water easier near the estuary.

Wind! Warm Water! Summertime Kiting!

Friday could be another great day of kiteboarding! Buoyweather is saying 12 to 16 but the last time it said that we had 25 at the beach. Yeah baby!

Hoping....

I've been out of town for a while and am hoping for wind. Next Thursday is looking good but starting with Sunday it looks possible. The direction is right. Maybe it is time to buy a big kite. Might stretch the season out for weeks at each end. Might even start kiting the southerlies again. The days of the Big Blows are fewer and fewer each year. Need to deal with what we have.

Beautiful Days

The windy days are getting fewer but when they come they sure are nice.

Weather has cooled off, the Wind has picked up

We've had some wind! Sometimes strong and gusty, sometimes not so strong and gusty. Friday and Saturday are looking good - then we'll have to hope the forecast changes. Right now the prediction is a return to hot weather but less wind.

Wednesday and Thursday

Wind has been spotty lately. This week Wednesday and Thursday look good but the rest of the week not so much. This past weekend the beaches were full and Semana Santa is just beginning!

Wow

Wow, it's been a month since I posted last. Most of that time I was out of the country - but still.

It is nice to be back in Mexico and back to kiting with the best group of kiters anywhere.

The tides are back to being high enough that the launch at Las Dunas is good. It is sooooo much nicer hanging out there than at the point.

More Wind

We've had lots of wind. Sometimes not the best direction. We should be getting more wind for a while. Nice! We also have Glenn's weather station back on line to give us real time wind report. http://www.weatherlink.com/user/gwbuild/

Hoping...

Forecast is looking good for today and several days more. Problem is we've been getting wind that is too northerly and results in gusty, variable conditions. Hoping for an excellent week of wind. It has been a bit chilly but it is supposed to warm up nicely the next few days. Temps back in the 80's in town - a bit less on the beach. Water temperature bottomed out at about 67 degrees and won't change much for a while. Not bad, though.

As Usual....

Well, we can't rely too heavily on the forecasts and we can't even rely on the nearby weather stations for real time reports. We just have to go out and see. And most of the time, it is good. Yesterday was another very good day, blowing over 20 knots and mellowing out as the afternoon progressed. Had six or seven kites on the water for a while.

It Keeps Getting Better

We've had more days with wind than without. Forecast hasn't been very accurate. Most afternoons have been surprisingly good. Today and tomorrow look light but the wind is forecast to be back on Saturday and could last all week!

It Feels Cold Out There

We've been having some nice wind, despite the forecasts. The water is still unseasonably warm but the wind is cold. Cloudy days haven't been helping. We can set up at the old Las Dunas bar and it is very nice. You can get out of the wind and you roll up the kite inside without sand.
